Because an electric winch must be able to respond to all maneuvers.

Best performance on the market.

To evaluate the performance of an electric winch, we measure the speed of the winch (Line Speed) for all a series of tensions on the rope (Line Load), from 0 kg up to the maximum tension that the winch can tow (Maximum Line Load).

We compared these performances to those of conventional electric winches (12V DC without variable speed) on the market.

Choose the size of winch that interests you to observe its performance (< >):

The performance of SailForce is based on our own tests, that of other electric winches on the market is based on public data provided by their manufacturers.

Discover below some explanations to help read these performances:

The fundamental difference between the representation of SailForce performance (in the form of a surface) and that of existing solutions on the market (presented in the form of curves) lies in the presence or absence of a variable speed.

  • The conventional electric winches: no variable speed -> curves.

The performances of conventional electric winches (operating at 12V DC and lacking variable speed) are represented by a single curve (in the case where only one of the two speeds of the winch is motorized) or possibly by two curves (in the case of winches with the two motorized speeds). Being devoid of variable speed, these winches offer a single furling speed for a given tension, without the possibility of adjustment.

  • SailForce: variable speeds -> a surface.

The SailForce electric winch has two variable speeds. This means that at a given voltage it offers a speed range from its minimum speed to its maximum speed. Thus, its performance is represented as a surface, encompassing its speed range from minimum speed to maximum speed.

For fine and precise adjustments, the important thing is to be able to use the electric winch as slowly as possible, regardless of the tension on the rope.

SailForce, with its two variable speeds , not only offers a lower minimum speed than all conventional solutions (less than 1.7 cm/second), but above all it is possible to have this minimum speed whatever the tension on the rope, therefore whatever the maneuver, and both at the beginning and at the end of the maneuver.

None of the conventional electric winches (12V DC without variable speed) allows a sufficiently low speed to be able to make precise adjustments regardless of the tension on the rope. They do not have variable speed, so their speed depends entirely on the tension on the string. And if this speed can possibly be adapted for one maneuver, it will most certainly not be adapted for another maneuver, each maneuver requiring very different tensions on the ropes.

At the start of a maneuver (raising the mainsail, tacking, etc.), speed is the best ally. At this time, the tension on the rope is relatively low, we use the high speed of the winch to go as quickly as possible before switching to the low speed of the winch when the tension increases and/or when we want to perform precise adjustment.

Conventional electric winches (12V DC without variable speed) offer more or less satisfactory speed when the tension is low on the ropes (left part of the graph), as you can see there are very big differences in performance;

During testing of our new SailForce electric winch, we had the very pleasant surprise of discovering that its performance in terms of high winch speed exceeded our expectations. Expectations:

For all winch sizes, SailForce high speed is at least 25% faster than all conventional electric winches.
